ARTIST STATEMENT

As an artist I am deeply concerned about the impact of my work on my immediate environment and the world at large and that is why themes of my art centers around the societal, political and economic imbalance taking over humanity’s happiness, swamping over the essence of society.

I am fascinated by people’s reaction to their immediate environment, and how it affects their demeanor and in turn affects their reaction to life. That is what I find really interesting, I see people trying to re-write their past, I see violence, I see the effect of corruption and mental slavery on the lives of nations citizens, I see people trying to find a way to live and survive.

From my work you can notice a strong striking focus from each of my subjects, this bold unwavering stare is my way of using my works to project identity formation, mental health, gender construct, societies and government’s impact on both the common man and the affluent. I have a need for facial representation and I am fascinated by its power to evoke an emotional response from my viewers.

The textured skin and dark brown eyes on my subjects are a representation of my subject’s experiences and how they are affected by it.

I am from the Country called Nigeria, in Africa and my work seeks to address the economic and political depravation of the people by its own leaders. I am using these works to address these issues by drawing attention to it and hopefully it leads to conversations that result to solution.

Africa has been misinterpreted and misrepresented a lot in the past, my works tend to try to correct these misinterpretations and misrepresentations. Using my work to draw attention to issues going on in Africa and addressing these issues using various subjects from Africa.

I use my work as a medium to express the everyday experiences of my people and in turn hope that my viewers can either relate or have a sense of understanding, to feel a connection to something larger and feel the magic of transformation, in so doing, inviting my viewers to look in; why and how the subject(s) has been affected.
